Bill Adams’s transition from a Wearside works team to Second Division football was not a rapid one. He was already in his 24th year by the time he left Southern League Guildford for The Dell, and then it took him another three seasons after his debut before he could term himself a regular in the side. When Mike Keeping departed for Fulham in 1933, however, Bill took over as captain and for three years remained a keystone in the defence, until he moved to West Ham for whom he scored on his debut…..against Saints.

His stay at Upton Park and then Southend were brief ones, before long he was back in Southampton and for 26 years he ran the Halfway Inn in Chandlers Ford.
