There is a fairly straight forward two-word reason why Bernard Pask’s career with Southampton amounted to just one game in the Southern Challenge Floodlight Cup, a semi-final defeat away to Coventry. ‘Terry Paine’.
Pask was a right-winger with plenty of local pedigree. He had played for the Southampton Schools side in 1952, won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup with Pirelli General in 1956, scoring a goal in the final and then been capped in both the Hampshire Youth and Senior XIs (See scrapbook section).
After being called up for his National Service (with Tony Godfrey) he was selected for the Army team but after his return to ‘civvy street’ and turning professional, he simply couldn’t get much of a look in as Paine was now already firmly established. In the ‘59-60season he found a niche at centre-forward in the Reserves for whom he top scored (14 goals in 24 appearances) but, after a less regular season the following year, he moved into non-league. Having served an apprenticeship as a plumber, he became a heating supervisor at Husband’s Shipyard – until a heart attack claimed his life at the age of 47. He was also a regular for the ex-Saints X1 (see scrapbook section).
