An inside-forward of considerable repute at county level, Arthur Farwell served St Mary’s for a five-year period, during which his did much to establish the Saints as the town’s premier club.

With players turning out in friendlies for whichever club they fancied, Arthur played the occasional game for Queens FC, but when it came to Cup competitions, he was a St Mary’s man. Quick and full of tricks, he had the knack of hitting vital goals in important games, most notably his last-minute equaliser at Cowes in the Hants Junior Cup semi-final of 1889.

Active until 1893, Arthur retired from football with the arrival of professionalism and became a draper in Havant. In later years, he was employed at the Edwin Jones department store in Southampton and maintained his connection with St Mary’s by assisting the church choir.
