Shropshire lad Arthur Denning came to Southampton from Somerset, a county he had represented at football, to teach – for the next 30-odd years – at Banister Court School.  An all-round sportsman, he played cricket for his school, rugby for the Trojans and – on 15 occasions – football for Hampshire. He otherwise spread himself thin as a footballer, turning out for several local sides and for both Corinthian and Casuals (some 50 years before these famous amateur clubs amalgamated). Amid which, he fitted in several friendlies for the Saints but would manage only two competitive appearances, both of them in local Cups.
