The son of former Norwich (and Scotland) goalkeeper, Bryan Gunn, Angus, as a youngster, was on the books of the club his father had represented on nearly 400 occasions. Manchester City then signed him as a 15-year old but it wasn’t until he went back to his home-town club on loan for the 2017-18 season that he made his League bow and he duly ended up being ever-present in Norwich’s Championship winning season while winning the first of 12 England U21 caps.

Southampton now came calling which was something of a surprise as the £13.5m fee was a hefty one for a goalkeeper expected to being behind Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy in the St Mary’s pecking order. After Mark Hughes departed his replacement, Ralph Hasenhuttl, gave Angus his Premier League debut v Chelsea in early January – he had made his debut in the League Cup-tie at Brighton in the August – and then gave him a run of ten games at the end of the season which ended with no one really knowing who was now considered Saints main goalkeeper. He started 2019-20 with another run of ten games again but that tenth game was the horrendous 0-9 defeat at home to Leicester and it was to be the last time Angus played Premier League football for Saints.

He spent most of 2020-21 on loan at Stoke but his season bedevilled by injuries and the ensuing close season he was allowed to rejoin Norwich, this time on a permanent basis. His acquisition had been an expensive and questionable one for the Saints, seeing that they took a substantial loss on his initial fee and he had only made 30 appearances in total.
