Glaswegian Andrew Gibson was playing in local football when Southampton signed him from under the noses of the Glasgow clubs. The Saints’ manager, George Swift, told the next month’s AGM that
Gibson was “the best forward” he’d ever seen and predicted that he would “be a thousand pounds man,”
the landmark of the Football League’s first £1,000 transfer having been reached six years earlier. Playing at inside-left, Andrew did not meet such expectations, although it was a breach of club discipline in an incident at the town’s Hippodrome that caused his premature departure: he was fined £5, his contract was terminated and he was suspended from the club, sine die. He returned to Scotland and now signed for Celtic on trial. Although he scored on his debut, it wasn’t long before a £100 fee took him to Football League, at Second Division Leeds City.
