Adam Armstrong tasted Premier League football with his hometown club before forging a name for himself as a goalscorer in the Championship. During 2021-22 he was particularly prolific scoring a total of 29 goals for Blackburn Rovers. Southampton reintroduced hom to top flight football in time for the onset of the next season and he made a scoring debut in the opening fixture.

Despite that auspicious start he struggled to find the net while the club were also finding it increasingly hard to hold onto their status. Over two seasons Adam scored just seven times in the Premier League with the result both he and Southampton found themselves relegated to the second tier. Once back in familiar territory Adam flourished once more, finding the net in the first game at Hillsborough which, as it was played on the Friday night, made him 2023-24’s first goalscorer. With Saints being promoted that season via the play-offs, his crucial goal at Wembley also made him the season’s last goalscorer. On his day he could be lethal and clinical but his finishing could also be erratic and back amid the top teams again he looked a different player. 2024-25 was a dreadful season for both player and club – he ended up going on loan, leaving a ship that was by then virtually sunk, even though it was only mid-winter.

The following season he was expected to be a key figure in the battle to regain a PL place but the goals had dried up completely and in something of a surprise development he was sold to Premier League strugglers, Wolves, with Saints recouping approximately half of their initial £15m outlay. Definitely one of those players who could blow hot or, cold he will always have a place in Sotonian folklore for the goal he scored at Wembley and for ripping his shirt off and running to the Saints fans thinking the final was over when in fact the whistle had been for a foul and he had to sheepishly put his shirt back on and help defend a free-kick.
