Doug Logan came to Hampshire to complete his National Service with the RAF at Amport, near Andover and was recommended to Southampton by their full-back, Peter Sillett, who was serving at the same airbase. He would get to play a lot of Reserves football. His first-team appearances at left-half came in two sustained spells – at the end of the 1955-56 season and in the autumn of the next – at the expense of Bryn Elliott. But even when Elliott and Jimmy McGowan each had his last senior outing in February 1958, there was no place for Logan; and the arrival of Ken Birch kept him down the order. Whereupon, Doug went non-league, initially in Dorset but finishing up in Kent.
