Centre-half Alf Varley was a member of that select group of pioneers, who played in the Saints’ first match in November 1885; featured in its first competitive fixture in the Hants Junior Cup, two years later; played in that season’s Final; and who then appeared, with that Cup, in the club’s first-known photo (see Frederic Crossley profile). Alf later became assistant-secretary and steward at the Royal Southern Yacht Club in Bugle Street, Southampton.
