An all-round sportsman, Victor Norbury’s main game was cricket. But he came through football in the New Forest to play three times, at full-back, for the Saints in the Southern League in 1905-06. He had made his cricketing debut for Hampshire, in the summer of 1905. He had not been in the 1st XI for while when he decided, in 1907, to keep fit in the winter by playing football for his native-village side. He broke his leg in his first game and effectively put paid to his Hampshire sporting days. Moving north, he played in three levels of cricket – Minor Counties for Northumberland; Lancashire League for East Lancashire; and first-class for Lancashire – before and after the First World War. In each of those counties, he managed to play non-league football without further detriment to his cricket. His sister married George Smoker, who had played with Victor at Hampshire and before him at Southampton.
