Having been restricted to only half-a-dozen games in Division I of the Football League for Burnley, Peter Dougall was having a second crack at the Scottish League’s First Division when the Southampton board raised the money to prise him from Clyde. The money came from the recently-formed Saints Supporters Club. It covered the purchase of Dougall and a team-mate, William Hood, for a fee of £400, with an additional £50 to be paid should either player make six appearances. Hood never made the first team at all, but Dougall had a couple of sustained spells at inside-left, aggregating 29 League games in three seasons. That was a disappointing return for a player
billed as being “in the Alex James class”.
True, he had the ability to beat a man on the proverbial sixpence, but he exasperated Southampton’s management by sometimes over-elaborating. Even so, the club calculated that his value had increased and placed him on the transfer list at £500. In the seeming absence of a clamor to sign him, he went to the south of France (pictured).
But he was soon back in the English First Division with Arsenal, where he got to play alongside James and, very soon, Ted Drake. But his Division I run-outs with Arsenal, and then with Everton, were somewhat occasional. The same went for his season at Second Division Bury, whereupon war broke out and he guested for Manchester United as his finale, while simultaneously employed as a general builder’s laborer in Bury.
