Emmanuel Mayuka hit the headlines in 2012, when Zambia won the African Cup of Nations and he picked up the Golden Boot award for his three goals in the tournament. Still only 21, he already had 36 caps under his belt.
While playing with his first club, Kabwe Warriors, as a teenager, he had scored 35 goals in the South African League, more than anyone else since that League’s unification in 1978.
His goals in Switzerland – 32 in 55 matches – meant that he arrived at Southampton in August 2012, with quite a reputation to live up to.
Given a five-year contract and billed by Nigel Adkins as “lightning quick and someone who will excite the fans,” Mayuka was not much seen by the fans in 2012-13. He did get one Premiership start for Adkins, but was otherwise an occasional sub for him and Mauricio Pochettino, in turn. Loaned out to Sochaux in September 2013, Emmanuel soon had the chance to impress a new manager, the ex-Zambian head coach, Hervé Renard, but was injured in his first game under his old international boss. Since then it is fair to say his career has not lived up to its early billing and in 2019 he was back in his native Zambia.
