Capped by Scotland in 1901 v Wales (see scrapbook section), Mark Bell had played all his football in Edinburgh prior to his move to Southampton and also in 1901 was part of the Hearts side that beat Celtic 4-3 in the Scottish Cup final.

At home on either wing, he was plagued by injuries during his spell at The Dell.

His nine Southern League appearances yielded six goals as the side retook the championship from Portsmouth. After a season back with Hearts, he joined Fulham in time to be part of the side that pipped the Saints for the Southern League title in 1906. Following spells elsewhere including Clapton Orient, he rejoined Fulham, by now a Football League club, after the suspension of “official” football on account of the War. After the War, he emigrated to Australia, but later returned to his native city, where he worked as a railway porter.
