A schoolmaster from Shalford in Surrey, Jack Barringer had two seasons as an amateur half-back at The Dell. Although considered by the local press to be

“a particularly good passer”

his only first team game, ended in a heavy 4-0 defeat so he had to be content with occasional Reserve-team outings thereafter, when his educational duties allowed, although his wife, Rose, thought the commute to Southampton to play football to be a little extravagant. WW1 intervened however and he became a medical soldier (a Private in the RAMC), serving three years in Salonika and was mentioned in dispatches for his work in combating malaria (the featured photo of him was taken in 1916 just before he left for the Mediterranean). He himself caught malaria in 1917 which led to a convalescence period back in England.

In 1926 he became a headmaster at Chessington C of E school and then, in 1932, he was appointed “head” back at Shalford School where he remained until he retired in the mid-fifties to Patcham in Sussex. Jack was something of an all-round sportsman in his youth, captaining Shalford Cricket Club while also being a fine swimmer. His brother-in-law, Arthur Gates, played two Southern league games for Northampton Town in the 1905-06 season.
