Because full-back Robert Bennett was registered with the Irish side Glentoran, Saints had to wait a while for his clearance from the Irish FA before he could make his debut at Norwich. It was an anti-climax: the defence was over-run in a 3-0 defeat, in which their hosts hit the woodwork no fewer than nine times. Bennett was not considered again and he returned to Ireland the following month. Later he informed the club that he had given up football and was working in the Belfast shipyards.
