Málaga’s youngest-ever scorer (aged 16 v Getafe, Copa Del Rey), Juanmi arrived at St Mary’s on a four-year deal in the summer of 2015, having just won his first full cap for Spain (v Holland). He had also the previous season grabbed the headlines when scoring the winner in the Nou camp when Málaga beat Barcelona . He could operate as a secondary striker, an attacking midfielder or on the left wing and when he made his debut, from the bench, in the Europa Cup v Vitesse he auspiciously set up Shane Long to make it 3-0 (see below). This start and his Spanish pedigree suggested he had a promising future, but Ronald Koeman thought otherwise and only gave him two League Cup starts that season and he returned to Spain just a year after he arrived. In June 2019 he joined Real Betis on a five-year deal for a fee of €8m, which suggested he had rediscovered some form.
