You’ll have seen the early team photos from the days of bring-your-own-linesman (or “umpire”), of bowler-hatted regulars in that role. Edwin Jarvis, who preferred a cap, ran the line for the Saints in 1895-96. At half-time in a Southern League game at Clapton, it was decided that Tom Cain was unfit to continue in goal and that Jarvis, who had kept goal for St Denys – and had his cap to hand, after all – would take his place.

Whether or not he had registered with St Mary’s as a player, he had no business coming on as a substitute. But the Southern League took no action – perhaps mindful of the fact that the Saints lost 7-3, with Edwin conceding three second-half goals. A rate-collector in the Southampton area, he graduated from the line to become a respected referee. He was also a director of the club from August 1897 until June 1909, when he was obliged to resign, after pleading guilty to false accounting with the rate books he used to oversee on behalf of the council.

He was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment and afterwards he moved to London and became a house-agent in the Fulham area.
