A local full-back, Sidney Rowthorn’s career with St Mary’s was crammed into five weeks early in 1894, beginning with the semi-final, and ending with the Final, of the Hants Senior Cup. Playing at left-back, he was injured in the fifth minute of the latter match, sustaining internal injuries, so serious that he was in a critical condition for days. He never played competitive football again, preferring the safer occupation of carpentry. During WW1 he was a carpenter and joiner at Thornycrofts in Woolston but by 1921 was unemployed.
