Bert Youtman first taste of football success was with Weston Grove who in 1907-08 won the Woolston & District League and the Weston St Malo Challenge Cup. Also in the side were Tom and Arthur Dominy.

He and Tom Dominy, the elder of the two brothers, featured regularly for Saints Reserves during the 1913-14 season, but between them only ever managed one first team appearance when Bert, an outside-left, appeared in a Southern Alliance fixture at home to Brighton. His prospects of further first-team outings came to a halt when war was declared and he enlisted in the Royal Horse Artillery.
He thereupon missed out on the last season of “official” football, but turned out occasionally during the four seasons of war-time football, having been stationed at Bulford Camp. He also spent some time working as a clerk at Harland & Wolff. After the War, he joined South Eastern League Thornycrofts and was part of their famous FA Cup run in 1920. Portsmouth took note and signed him in time for him to play in their Southern League run-in. But over the next two seasons, he would get but one Third Division game. After which, he returned to local football – until he left for Canada in 1924. He moved on to the USA, where he worked in the Quincy dockyards on Massachusetts Bay during the 1940s, but only until he returned to Southampton for a while. Come 1953, he went back to America, this time to California.
