Having played local football before the First World War and army football during it, George Williams joined Southampton after being demobbed. Turning pro towards the end of his first season, he duly made his debut in one of the annual charity matches. When Arthur Dominy was injured early in the next season – the first in the new Third Division – George had a couple of games at inside-right. But that was his lot.

Slight of build, he could be easily knocked off the ball, although that didn’t stop him scoring his share in two seasons with the Reserves.

He got some first-team football with Exeter City, struggling in the new Third South as the Saints won that division, until a leg injury ended his professional career prematurely. Returning to Southampton in 1922, George played regularly in the Hampshire League, while carrying on his original trade of painting and decorating.
