Stan Smith joined Southampton after winning medals in local football and having already represented Hampshire.
A small but plucky winger, he had a talent for crossing accurately from seemingly impossible positions.
He straight away went on the summer tour to Holland and Germany yet that earned him precious few first-team outings in the following three seasons at The Dell. In January 1911, Airdrieonians of the Scottish First Division sought his signature. They were rejected and Stan, dissatisfied with his limited chances, soon after gave up the game for good. He joined the 18th Hussars prior to the outbreak of war. Discharged in October 1917 he went into the grocery business but by 1939 had become the branch manager of a Winchester-based Builders Merchants.
