Plucked from the coalmines by Stoke, Peter Durber had an occasional game as Stoke struggled to stay in the Football League’s First Division. After two seasons of which, he joined Southampton, where he would enjoy two successful campaigns, mostly at left-back, winning both a Southern League championship medal, in 1899, and an FA Cup runners-up medal in 1900.

His strong tackling, coupled with an ability to find a colleague with a pass, earned him an international trial in 1900. Disappointed not to be awarded a full cap, he returned to Stoke, whence he slid, via Second Division Glossop, back to the Southern League with Northampton, initially as a player, but later as a trainer. That didn’t last long and he returned to coal-mining, before taking over a public house in the Potteries.

In May 2010, both of his medals were sold at auction, fetching £2,400.
