As a schoolboy, David Scurr tasted plenty of success which was also the case when he became a youth player. He was a member of the Youth team that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final in 1957 and skippered it from left-half the next season. He helped Hampshire win the FA County Youth Cup and was a travelling reserve for the England-Holland Youth international at Holland in 1958.

In the 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons he was the regular left-back for the Reserves but as Tommy Traynor’s understudy he would only get four senior outings before leaving the club, aged only 21. His last game had come in the FA Cup defeat at home to Leyton Orient where, coming in at the last minute due to Traynor being ill he had been given an uncomfortable afternoon by Orient winger Errol Crossan. A more-than–useful cricketer, he once took 7-21 for Hants 2^nd XI. He lived in Sholing. (See scrapbook section)
