One of four players who graduated from Hylton Colliery (see scrapbook section) into the ranks of pre-war professional football with Luton Town during the 1938-39 season, Augie Scott then saw active in Burma from 1943 to1946, during which time he was given the last rites after contracting malaria. In the summer of 1947, manager Bill Dodgin not only signed Scott from Luton, but he also acquired George Curtis from Arsenal.
For the next two seasons, until he moved to right-half, Curtis would be almost a fixture at inside-right.
Which meant that Augie would be competing, for the most part, with Ted Bates for the inside-left spot.
Bates’s advantage in this regard was implied by centre-half, Stan Clements, when he recalled that Augie was “a quick, neat little player, who didn’t have the height”. At 5ft 9ins, Bates wasn’t exactly tall, but his jumping prowess has been analysed in his profile. So when the 6ft Lewis was replaced, at centre-forward, by the 5ft 8ins Wayman in November 1947, Bates’s aerial ability acquired additional significance. The good news for Augie was that both Bates and he got to go on the 1948 trip to Brazil, but he would never have more outings in a season than Ted. By 1950-51, he was right out of first-team contention having turned down an exchange deal with Plymouth’s Maurice Tadman but he did then agree to follow Bill Rochford to Colchester, the Football League’s new boys for a fee of £2,000. After which, he made almost 300 games as a part-timer at Southern League Cheltenham, latterly as player-coach, before joining Birmingham League Evesham in 1961, when he was coming 40.
All of which he combined with a job in the building trade in the Cheltenham area, where he continued to live and work until 1969. He then returned to Southampton, where he remained in the brick-laying trade, while also managing at Hedge End for a while. His Southampton team-mate, Wilf Grant, and he married Southampton-born sisters, he had a brother, Jack who played for Sunderland, Nottingham Forest and Hartlepool United and a nephew, Tommy Mitchinson who also played for Sunderland as well as Aston Villa, Bournemouth, Mansfield and Torquay.
