Born in Canada, Bill Sanders was a gunner in the Artillery at Gosport when he signed amateur forms for Southampton in Mar 1913. He was immediately thrust into Southern League action, for a couple of games at inside-left. His army duties restricted his availability and the limitations increased with the growing unrest in Europe. After one more outing with the first team, and several for the Reserves, in 1913-14, his services were required in the First World War – for which he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. In 1939 he was living in Woolwich and was an insurance clerk.
