Archie Waterston scored plenty of Third Division goals, both before he signed for Southampton – 35 in a season-and-a-half for Newport – and later in a record-breaking season with Southport including a five-goal haul in a eight one win over Nelson. His half-a-dozen Division II games for the Saints were mostly as a stand-in for the oft-injured Willie Haines, although he did play alongside him twice.

He had cost Newport County just £50 when he joined them from Cowdenbeath and once Reg Weaver had left for Wolves he started his prolific scoring run. When manager Arthur Chadwick traveled to Newport to finalise the signing he did so in the knowledge he was getting his man at a knock down price owing to County’s worsening financial situation.

But, Archie scored just the once and was soon on his way to the Third North, initially with Tranmere, but then notably at Southport, who broke numerous scoring records in 1930-31, to which Archie contributed 31 goals in only 29 games. His arrival at Southport had only come about because finding himself without a club he advertised in the “Situations Wanted” section of the ‘Athletic News’.

He then had two more Third Division clubs which included 24 league goals scored for Doncaster Rovers during the 1932-33 season, before ending his career, playing on his native doorstep, in the Scottish Division II. He then reverted to his original trade as a dye-maker, spending 30 years as a foreman in the tungsten die department at Brunton’s Wire Works in his native Musselburgh. After retiring he also assisted his daughter and grandson in their greengrocers’ shop.
