Bought for a quarter of a million pounds to act as cover for Dave Beasant and Bruce Grobbelaar,

Neil Moss was a more than capable goalkeeper who did not let the team down when called upon.

His chances were further limited, however, by the arrivals of Paul Jones and Antti Niemi, in turn, and Neil was released from his contract in January 2003. He rejoined Bournemouth, serving them well until a wrist injury caused his retirement in 2008. He set up his own coaching school, Between the Sticks, and became a full-time coach at Bournemouth in 2009. He works not just with goalkeepers, but with the entire squad from the academy to the first team, although, four years into the post, he was still taking his outfield coaching badges.

Neil’s one regret, given that his playing career ended early, is that he didn’t leave Southampton sooner, so as to secure regular first-team football. In 2019 he completed a decade at Dean Court, a period when the club were very much on the up and up.
