Jhon Viáfara was a tall, box-to-box midfielder who also relished a tackle. A Colombia international, he was brought to the Premiership by Portsmouth, where his stay was cut short by the second coming of Harry Redknapp, who duly packed him off to Spain on loan and then sold him to Southampton.

He will be best remembered, perhaps, for scoring twice – to no avail, as it happened – in the Championship play-off semi-final at Derby in 2007. After that disappointment, Jhon stuck around and nobody featured in more of the Saints’ Championship fixtures than he did, as the side narrowly staved off relegation in 2007-08.

Jhon’s energetic style was well-suited to the Championship and he was one of the club’s better acquisitions at a time when the revolving door at St Mary’s was spinning off its hinges, as players of dubious quality came and went.

But one of the outcomes of the changes in the boardroom and in the management – with a shared commitment to youth-development – was that Jhon, who was publicly at odds with the incoming manager, Jan Poortvliet, returned to Columbia, pleading home-sickness.

In March 2019 he was arrested in Colombia for alleged involvement in drug trafficking to the US. He was extradited to Texas in October 2019 and sentenced 18 months later.
