Although Cuthbert Coundon was still an apprentice-joiner when he came to Southampton, he was already a sturdily-built 20-year-old. But his youthful appearance, coupled with his enthusiastic performances on the Saints’ right-wing, soon earned him the nickname of “The Kid”. In his three years at The Dell, his first-team appearances nearly all came in two autumnal spells: in 1925, pending Bill Henderson’s return from injury; and in 1927. Then, in the summer of 1928, he was transfer-listed at £300, the sum Southampton had paid to Jarrow. But Wolverhampton paid only half that amount to keep him in Division II. After a season of which, he dropped down a division at Southend, before serving the non-league game in various capacities. By the time WW2 came around, he was a carpenter in Sutton, Surrey.
