Edward Clements was at the Ordnance Offices in London Rd, Southampton (see avove), working – and playing – for the Royal Engineers when he signed amateur forms for the Saints. Soon given the first-team opportunity at outside-left in a Southern Charity Cup match, he didn’t impress. After a few games for the Reserves, he left the club the following month. Over the next year or so, he tried his luck with Middlesbrough and West Ham, both unsuccessfully. When WW2 broke out he was a Kingston-upon-Thames-based surveyor and draughtsman.
