The only Hampshire-born player to feature in the Saints’ FA Cup Final sides of 1900 and 1902, Arthur (“Archie”) Turner was also the first man from the county to be capped by England – and the first player in the country ever to receive an international call-up in his debut season in first-class football.

That rapid rise to fame helped to make him a marked man. Despite some tough treatment from opposing full-backs,

Archie continued, though, to produce some exciting wing play, regularly completed by accurate centres.

If he had a fault, it was a reluctance to shoot: he would too often pass, instead, to a less well-placed team-mate. Lured, after three seasons, to First Division Derby County, by a sizeable financial inducement, Archie hardly missed a game in half-a-season but he was then allowed to leave for Newcastle, also of Division I.

He would never add to his two caps and came to regret leaving The Dell. He would soon return to the Southern League, stopping off briefly with Spurs, prior to a second spell with Southampton. He was still only 27, yet he never recaptured the form of his earlier years with the Saints. And so, after an in-and-out season, he left to spend more time in his father’s business in Farnborough and to have a long final stint with South Farnborough Athletic, during which they had a couple of seasons in the Southern League’s Second Division.
