A former coal miner in his native Northumberland, Joe Clark had signed pro for Southern League Cardiff City in 1913. He made an impression while playing for Cardiff, by now of the Football League, in the FA Cup against Saints in February 1921. Although he soon moved to Aberaman in South Wales, Southampton signed him in time for their first season in Division II.
A fixture on the Saints’ left-wing until Boxing Day, he was thereupon replaced by Len Andrews. He managed to get a game at the end of that season’s replay-ridden Cup-run but left for Third Division Rochdale come the summer.
