Walter Triggs was a loanee from Freemantle when he made his Southampton debut in a United League side from which several first-team regulars had been rested, following their exertions in an FA Cup semi-final replay, the previous day. It would be another two years before he signed for the Saints full-time and a further two years before he made his Southern League debut.

With his sure kick, a fine turn of speed and a fearless tackle, he had “the makings,” the Echo judged, “of a fine full-back.”

Which was all very well, save that George Molyneux was ahead of him. Only when Molyneux was on international duty in April 1902 – the ill-fated Ibrox game – did Walter make his Southern League debut. It got worse. Early the following season, he had a cold. Complications in his lungs set in and he died, 18 months later, aged only 24.
