A forward, Bill Travers came to Southampton from the local amateur club, Gordon Avenue, who played on The Common. He won promotion to the Saints’ first team by netting a hat-trick for the Reserves against Eastleigh Athletic in March 1901.

The Echo felt that he “showed promise” on his Western League debut and that he “affected some smart spirits”.

But after only one more appearance at that level, Bill returned to the Reserves, for whom he continued to play, the following season. A draughtsman by trade, he was employed at the Ordnance Survey Office. During the Great War, he served with the Royal Engineers.
