An amateur inside-forward, Fred Allan had played just one Reserve game before being thrust into first-team action in the Rowland Hospital Cup match in May 1931. With 15 of the club’s professionals on strike, Fred filled in at Fratton Park and scored the opening goal with a header in a surprise 2-2 draw (see scrapbook for more details). He remained at The Dell throughout the next season, but failed to make any impact at Reserve-team level. In 1939 he was listed as a War Police Reserve.
