Oxford-born Callum McNish started out at Watford’s academy, playing left midfield, although he would develop a preference for a more central role. But it was Southampton who brought him through, from their U-12 level to signing pro – and then making a League One appearance, coming off the bench during the 2009-10 run-in. That was it. At the end of the following season, as the Saints were promoted, he joined Exeter, who would be leaving League One, in 2012, in the opposite direction. Not that Callum had a lot to do with that: he hardly featured and was heading for non-league football, in a 2012-13 season of rapid changes that took him home to Oxfordfordshire.
