On 20 April 1901, Southampton’s first-teamers were sailing for Holland, where they would kick-off their European tour, the following day. Which meant that they needed to draft in a few players to fulfil the Western League fixture in London, which clashed with their crossing. These included  trialist Jack McNee. Having scored for Renton when they won the Scottish Cup in 1888, Jack had been with two Football League clubs – Bolton in the First Division and Newcastle in Division II – and had had experience as a player-trainer, before becoming a Southern League regular with West Herts (who became Watford at the end of his first season). His trial match with the Saints proved to be a one-off and he soon joined Fulham for their promotion season from the Southern League’s Division II.
