Don Greenlees would find his path to first-team football blocked, in 1899-1900, by his fellow-Scots, Sammy Meston and Bob Petrie. So, although he had found part-time employment in the Docks he returned, at the end of that season, for eight seasons in the Scottish First Division, the first seven of them at St Mirren. His best days were at Love Street where he played a total of 219 matches over his two spells and according to the Saints’ historian in Scotland he was regarded as one of the clubs best players in the early years of league competition.

In 1904, he represented the Scottish League against the Irish League. After which, he returned to Southampton, where he played part-time, locally, while working for Eastleigh Railway Works. By the time of the 1911 census he was working in the Docks again for the White Star American Lines, and was having his final football fling in their works team and he featured in the 1911 seamen’s charity match at The Dell. Although he is not mentioned in the 1939 mini census, by the time of his death in 1955 he had moved to Atherton.
