Half-back Samuel Greenhalgh arrived from Second Division Gainsborough Trinity in time to join the Saints’ summer tour. He had the misfortune to sustain a serious ankle injury in the Prague stage of the tour. He never really regained his fitness and his 1906-07 season consisted of one first-team appearance and half-a-dozen games for the Reserves. So he re-signed for Gainsborough.

But he soon gave up football to travel. In November 1946 he wrote a letter to the Gainsborough Evening News seeking news of old “Trinitarians”. He revealed that after quitting football he travelled to South America but returned to the Yorkshire area and played some local football before deciding to emigrate to Canada where he played as captain and centre-half for the ‘Sons of England’ football club in Victoria, British Columbia. After two and a half years he returned to England but was soon off again this time to Africa where he continued to use his words “play more football”.

The next time he returned to the UK, WW1 was in progress but his old injury prevented him joining the Forces so “he did his bit by working in a shell filling factory and captained the work’s team at football”. Bad luck then came his way (he did not elaborate) so he took himself off to Australia for four years, but did not play much football because of his injured ankle. He now returned to Africa and finally made his home in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe) and “after a hard time in the depression began to make progress with his own furniture business. In 1938 he decided to “tour the world but only for a holiday” and he returned to build his own house in five acres of land in the Salisbury suburbs while growing a variety of fruit and vegetables. His parting words in the letter was that once conditions were more favourable in England he intended to return for a visit but, whether that ever happened is not known, nor is his eventual fate.
