Southampton had to beat off the attentions of Derby, Brighton and Fulham, in order to secure the signature of George Green from Kent League Northfleet United.
An outstanding full-back, neat in style and quick off the mark,
George might have gone far in the game had it not been for the intervention of the Great War, if not for Southampton, who banned him sine die in April 1915, for being drunk on an away trip to Swansea. That ban was soon lifted, on request, to enable George to play war-time football for Millwall. And in 1918, he even turned out three times for the Saints. After the War, he rejoined Northfleet. In 1939 his occupation was listed as a “grinder”.
