An England schoolboy international (see scrapbook section) seven times over and the scorer of a goal at Wembley, Martin McGrath’s senior Southampton career consisted of coming off the bench during a 2-0 defeat at Leeds in March 1980. Moving, at the end of that Division I season, to Fourth Division Bournemouth, he played only 17 times for them, before quitting League football. He played in the Isthmian League for a while, with Oxford City, commuting from London, where he worked in the gaming industry – as a croupier, dice-dealer and Gaming Inspector in London’s Ritz Club.

He once enjoyed having Bobby Moore as a chauffeur. When he was commuting from London to play for Oxford, Moore was his manager – with Harry Redknapp assisting. Bobby would pick Martin up and drive him to Oxford for matches and training.

In 1990, Martin joined British Airways at Heathrow, working in Sales for a couple of years and then, for 13 years, in Customer Services, looking after Royalty and other VIPs. In 2005, he moved to France and lived in a small village in Normandy, owning and managing a website, from which he sold designer-toothbrushes. That business eventually folded owing Martin says from too much competition from Amazon and eBay, but in 2019 he was still happily living in France and popping over to the UK to see friends now and again while keeping an eye on the fortunes of his old club.
