George Carter had not long retired and taken charge of Saints’ Reserves when he spotted Bill Bundy playing, upfront, in his local, Eastleigh football. When Bill duly signed for Southampton, such as the club’s forward talent that he became a regular in Carter’s Reserves in 1902-03. He had but two first-team breaks – both against Reading – and scoring on his debut failed to further his cause. As a wagon-maker at Eastleigh’s Carriage Railway Works, he now had three spells with the railway’s works team, Eastleigh Athletic, interspersed with spells at other local clubs.
