Hailing from the coal-mining district of Audley in North Staffordshire, Arthur Buckley had worked in the mines as a hewer. Having moved to the Fishponds area of Bristol, in pursuit of his trade, he signed for Bath City.

His goal-scoring feats attracted a Southampton scout.

He was duly signed as an amateur in January 1914, made his Southern League debut, that same month, and promptly turned professional.

A few more games in the Southern Alliance proved, however, to be the extent of his Saints career and, with war looming, he returned to his native Staffs and enlisted in the 5th North Staffordshire Reserves. In 1939 he was a Stoke based laborer dealing with sanitary works.
