The club’s difficulties with wingers during the 1923-24 season (Charlie Brown and Sam Meston Jr had been vying for the right-wing slot when Sammy broke a leg) prompted Saints to pay a £500 transfer fee to Luton Town for the services of Bill Henderson who had made half-a- dozen First Division appearances for Arsenal en route to Kenilworth Road. A puzzling player, not only to the opposition but often to his own team mates, he could make the most amazing runs dribbling the ball through places where it did not seem possible. His footwork was so convoluted that he was dubbed “Tishy” by the crowd, after a famous racehorse of the day, which was supposed to cross its forelegs when running.

He was certainly the most unconventional right-winger who played for Saints during the 1920s with his play shifting unaccountably from the exquisite to sheer vaudeville.

A month after his arrival the Football Echo noted that he “was a queer combination of brilliance and error” and after entertaining The Dell for five years which included both semi-finals of 1925 and 27 “Tishy”, having recovered from a broken arm sustained early on in the 1927-28 season, moved to Coventry City for £200. He returned to his home-town club Carlisle United, who had just been elected to the Third North in October 1929 and then retired the following May playing centre forward for his final game, a 5-0 rout of Wigan Borough. After toying with an idea of running a fish and chip shop he decided to join Carlisle Corporation, initially emptying meters for the council’s gas undertaking. Later he became a rent collector and remained with the corporation until his retirement.
