Aged just 18, Ryan Fraser turned his back on his first professional club to make the long trek to the south coast to join Bournemouth for a fee of £400,000 and in his first season helped them reach the Championship. He then played a significant part in their rise to the Premier League but transfer speculation heralded a drop in form. He subsequently fell out with manager Eddie Howe when during the prolonged season which was disrupted by Covid he refused to sign a short-term contract and at the beginning of the next season he moved to Newcastle.

After Steve Bruce was dismissed from the managerial position at St James Park, Ryan and Eddie Howe were reunited when the latter took over the managerial reins. At first the pair appeared to overcome previous differences but in by March 2023 he was training with the U21s after Howe had questioned his commitment and that summer Russell Martin brought him to St Mary’s initially on a season long loan. When he subsequently played a big part in Saints gaining promotion back to the Premier League that deal was made permanent but both he and the club immediately hit a brick wall back in the top flight and he struggled for games under a succession of new managers. The owner of 26 Scottish caps, he departed for Australian football during the 2026 transfer window.
