A stone mason by trade, John Harris was brought from Hampshire League football to The Dell. He got his Southern League break with three games at wing-half at the end of the 1906-07 season.

A bustling type of player who distributed the ball well,

he was unable to do himself justice, never being on the winning side as the Saints finished in the bottom half of the Southern League for the first time ever. Whereupon, he moved to the Midlands. He played for a while for Dudley Town but then returned to his first club at Eastleigh. In 1939 he was a builder/carpenter.
