Invited to The Dell in 1967 by chief scout Tom Parker, Northam-born, Les Harfield became an England schools and youth international (see scrapbook section). Understandably he was regarded as an exciting prospect and looked to have done career ambitions no harm when he scored with a crisply-hit shot on his home debut, a 6-0 end-of-season rout over Crystal Palace. Unfortunately that was as good as it was to get for Les, he sustained a serious knee injury which led to him being released and after just one substitute appearance for Luton, his League career ground to a halt. He moved to Tenerife for a period but, in 2022, he was living back in Southampton.
