Southampton signed the Argentinian goalkeeper, Willy Cabellero as emergency cover when Alex McCarthy got injured in a match at Brighton. He was a free agent and he went straight into the team that then lost 3-0 at Arsenal (see below). He was vastly experienced, having played over 300 games in Spain and more recently being back-up at Manchester City and Chelsea. An initial one month deal was extended until the rest of the season and such was his professionalism he was then given a one-year contract in the ensuing summer, despite being the wrong side of 40. With relegation came talk of potentially another deal but he chose instead to get a foot on the managerial ladder by becoming Enzo Maresca’s assistant at Leicester City. Leicester’s recently-installed new manager and he had become acquainted at Malaga.
