Moroccan-born but growing up in Norway, Moi Elyounoussi top scored for Molde as they completed the Norwegian double for their first time in their history in 2015 and then he lifted the doublet at his next club, FC Basel in 2017. Mark Hughes, then Southampton’s manager, signed him as a replacement for Dusan Tadić in the summer of 2018 with £16m exchanging hands and a five-year contract on offer. Hughes told the website –

An injury early on meant he found it hard to gain momentum, as he himself admitted when looking back on his underwhelming first season when he only made 11 starts. Come the summer he was shipped off to Celtic on loan and at Parkhead he found his feet once more and in 44 games over a two years in Scotland he found the net 14 times. He returned a more confident player and scored a hat-trick in a League Cup-tie at Newport, which got his 2021-22 season off to a good start. He became the sort of player that found more favour with the manager rather than the fans over the next two seasons making 50 starts in the Premier League but only finding the net on five occasions. He was a grafter who followed instructions to the letter, reasons why Ralph Hasenhuttl selected him more often than not, but his impact in opposition penalty areas was lacking and with his contract expiring in June 2023 and him choosing to turn down a new one, there weren’t many who lamented his departure. The following month he signed for FC Copenhagen on a four-year contract. Over 50 Norwegian caps gives weight to the argument that he could play, but arguably he was not the sort who took naturally to the Premier League.
