2022-23 was a wretched season for Southampton FC as well as being interrupted by the World Cup in Qatar. Croatia finished 3rd in the competition and one of their players who caught the eye was Mislav Oršić who had scored the winning goal in the 3rd/4th play-off match. The St Mary’s recruitment team reckoned he could do a job to help the club stave off relegation and £6m exchanged hands to bring the left-winger from Croatian football to the Premier League. Although 30-years-old it was his first taste of elite European football, having spent a lot of his 20s playing in Korea and China. To say his spell with Saints was underwhelming is putting it mildly as he only made a six-minute contribution from the bench in one Premier League game supplanted by just three starts in Cup competitions. He looked hugely out of his depth and it was no surprise when he was the first player to exit the club – via a transfer – in the ensuing summer for a fee of around £4m. 27 caps for Croatia would suggest somewhere in there lurked a decent player but not many fans in Southampton could be persuaded that to be the case.
